forgot to ask something...
I have another question I forgot to ask if you all dont mind....
I have a 150 watt bulb for daytime warmth, and a 75 watt red bulb for noght time warmth.
my question is, how important is it to keep the day/night on a strict schedule?
basically, I turn on the red bulb when I go to bed, or when I remember to do so if I am having one of those nights ai cant sleep.
do they need, for example, 12 hours of "daylight" and 12 hours of "night", like on a strict schedule, or is it not that big of a deal if you forget every so often?

Re: forgot to ask something...
Does your snake have natural sunlight, in the background? If it does you should not NEED to provide any other light cycle. The light cycle can be used to trigger breeding, but if you don't need that type of cue then 12 on / 12 off should work fine.
Oh and don't worry about asking questions. You can't learn if you don't ask.

Re: forgot to ask something...
thanks folks...I truely appreciate all the help
basically, my set up is the lamps I mentioned, for both heat and light. Nag sits in front of a window right now but the blinds are down, so he doesnt get any direct sunlight.
even with the lamps, the humidity is at 70% pretty much constantly, and the temps are where they are supposed to be.
I am not breeding, so the 12/12 day/night cycle will work?
should I increase the light since summer is coming, or will the 12/12 work for that as well?
and I really apreciate the help
I thought I knew more than what I did, but thanks to you all, Nag is sitting pretty in his tank

Re: forgot to ask something...
If Nag is in a room with a window that allows some amount of light in the room, then he doesn't really need supplemental lighting, except for heat if you need it that way. He doesn't need "direct sunlight" to get the day/night cycle...just....light. So, unless the room is really, really dark all the time, you don't need to worry about flipping lights on and off.
If you're using them for heat, then you can just stick with the red light and not worry about switching them.
Unless you're trying to cycle specifically for breeding purposes, I don't think they need a really rigid day/night schedule...pretty much just whatever your own day/night schedule is.
I don't pay much attention to the clock in my snake's room (here in the office). When I'm done for the night, the lights go off and it's dark. Enough sunlight comes in through the blinds that I don't have to worry about turning lights back on in the morning. And if I'm going to be up freakishly late or something, then I'll throw a dark cloth over the tank so my lights don't bother her late at night.

Re: forgot to ask something...
What size cage are you using? 150w on 75 gallon aquarium would really cook most anything. What are your ambient room temps?
If the 75w red bulb gives sufficient heat, run that light 24/7. For daytime viewing, you'd probably be better off using a regular flourescent light that doesn't give off any heat. Uses a lot less power too, and probably won't cook your snake.

Re: forgot to ask something...
if I were to stop using the day light, the temp would fall quite a bit. however, with warmer weather here in Minneapolis comes a higher humidity as well as warmer temps. I wont know till it hits 90 degrees if I'm going to need a heat light during the day.
as it stands now, the cool side is about 85 and the hot side is just above 90, and the humidity is holding steady at about 65 to 70 percent, so it seems I'm doing something right.
I do. however have yet another question....if the ambient temp in the room Nag is in stays at about 80 to 90 during the summer (with no a/c) would it suffice to only use the heat lamp at night if it drops below 80 in the room he is in?
