Getting ready to shed

As some of you know, the bp I got earlier this month came with a retained eye cap. I noticed her eyes were blue yesterday. I went ahead and put 2 mice in with her last night just because I had them thawed for some of the others and they wouldn't eat. She ate them. My question is, what's the best way to get her humidity up for this shed. I want to make sure that eye cap comes off. I checked her humidity this morning and it was only 20%. I put a piece of plexiglass over the top to try to keep the humidity in but it doesn't seem to be helping. I am going to put a humid hide in today with some damp spagnum moss in it. Will she just know to go in there? Any other suggestions?

What is your heating source? Are you using lights or emitters of any sort?

When we were using glass we put transparent contac paper over all the screen lids we had - was a vast improvement and the stuff was really easy to work with. Otherwise make sure your (larger) water dish is over the UTH (and away from any overhead heat sources). THe humid hide is always useful - and much like warm/cool hides your BP will go where it feels the need.

I have a UTH. I don't use overhead lights or heat. I will try moving the water to the UTH and see what happens. Thanks.

You bet - that in and of itself will give you a bump. A wider bowl with more surface area will also increase it a tad.

weaver you know what i have heard is getting a damp wash rag and putting it in the tank with them.... i read that on a red tail boa web site.. well if nothing else works for you try that, i havent tried it yet fortunatly i have been lucky with humidity.....

Damp rags = potential bacteria/mold and all sort of other ill things - i know people do things liek that but I (personally) would never advise it - I know how bad damp towels left around by the kids get and how short a time it takes to go that route.

Shagnum is a good stand-in for that as the ph keeps it from munging up too bad.

I made my humid hide with a rolled up hemp cloth. Hemp cloth holds a lot of moisture, and is naturally resistant to mold and bacteria. My bp will be shedding any day now and has been spending a lot of time in there.
