Breeding pastels

So, we bought a lemon pastel recently, and we are thinking about a mate for him... would we want to stay away from other lemon lines and get a different line? Or would it not matter? Okay, thanks guys like always!

Assuming you want to produce super pastels, any line will do, as there are great-looking, as well as poor-looking pastels in every line. If you are worried about inbreeding, that is hardly a concern with co-doms (not even a major concern with recessives), as they are perpetually outbred. Good looking lemons are my fav., and Kev has produced some killer looking super lemons, but once again, good-looking snakes generally make good looking snakes.

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I was worried about inbreeding within the line if there was too much of a chance that they were closely related. IF there isn't much of a chance for that, I would love to hook my lemon up with another lemon

Be careful! ... There is only one true "Lemon" line ... originated by NERD. Lots of people out there like to tack the word "lemon" on to their imported pastels, but they are not the same thing! .... Make sure your Lemon or the Lemon that you will be buying is descended from a NERD Lemon Pastel!!!

Thank you adam ) I bought my lemon from Al from Hardford reptiles, and he told me he comes from the nerd line. I trust him, but i will be super careful for the next purchase.

What is your opinion of breeding to lemon lines together? Should you mix pastels or is it okay to breed through the same line without much risk ?

Like was stated earlier, most doms/co doms are bred to normals to produce more of them, this outbreeding helps strengthen the genetics, and keeps it from being inbred. If you buy siblings of super pastels, there is more inbreeding going on, but still unless it is done perpetually with no outbreeding to normals (which is the most profitable way to go for most) Then I wouldnt worry.

If you are concerned about it, just dont buy two lemons you are going to breed from the same person, or dont buy siblings to supers, even though by breeding them to a different pastel from a different person, you would be outbreeding again and lessening the chance of genetic issues.

I think that if you want to make super lemon pastels, you should find the best looking female lemon that you can ... raise her up nice and big ... and make some killer babies.

If you want to be extra safe, just make sure the girl doesn't come from the same sire or dam as your male.

Try not to buy any from Alabama or Kentucky. May want to avoid Tennesee and West Virginia too, just to be on the safe side....

Sam usually/normally the caution sign is often targeted at breeders. Why those states in particular? Just curious.
