Just got my first ball python today from an independent breeder, to me it seems pretty healthy. i have the habitat set up to what ive read around here. the python has been in a ball all day. just wondering if thats normal and its just getting use to its new home.

welcome to the sight. first of all, you should have two hides in there. yes it is normal for them to be in balls (hence the name BALL python) and especially during the day because they are nocturnal. make sure your temps and humidity are good as well. here is the caresheet from our site. http://www.ball-pythons.net/modules....warticle&id=52

welcome to the site. check out the caresheets on this site. double check all your husbandry, get the temps right, put a couple more hides in that tank, and last but not least leave him/her alone for a few days. the one thing ball pythons have taught me is PATIENCE! lol

Is the hide in the picture just a hide or is a heated rock thing? Just in case you haven't read this, heat or hot rocks are not a good idea because ball pythons can get bad burns from them.

Please feel free to poke and ask lots of questions! There are many great experienced folks here to help. =)

That looks like a hide to me...not a heat rock. Just put one more like it on the other side of the tank and you'll be set. (So long as you've got temps and humidity nailed...lol)

i'm still learning, i haven't got the patience thing down completetly. probably never will! lol but i have learned that these are independent living creatures that can be different at times. they have their own timeline and schedules and everything is not set in stone.

Thanks guys for the help, i got the temps like the care sheet says too, but my humidity has problems reaching 50% ive put the water near the heat lamp and put the wraping on the cover to hold the humidity. but the best ive gotten was 48%

Well I'm a complete noob with snakes (and you might know more than me), but I would like to share my expirence with you if that is ok. I've had mine for 3 weeks. Held him/her about 4 times in that time. Made a better home for him/her and was advise not to hold him/her (boy I need to come up with a name already) for a couple weeks so I'm not going to. But mine seems pretty mellow for the most part...sometimes breathes heavy at first but soon relaxes. The odd thing is, and someone correct me if I'm wrong in what I was doing, but if my snake would freeze up on me, after a couple minutes or so I would gently and slowly rub his/her side and then my snake would relax and move around. It seemed that that actually calmed him/her down...but then again I'm a noob. Of course with what I've read...I would say we both just need to give our snakes some time to get used to us and thier new homes. But I'm excited...snakes are awsome!!
