Eh, I don't know if he necessarily has "problems", but here's what I think.

You get out of life what you put into it. Bruno said that in the show tonight. I agree. If you go into an everyday situation with preconcieved notions, chances are you will then assemble your experience to fit around that preconception.

Maybe he just hadn't yet been in a situation that could show him the true force of racism in society today. I think something will come along later in the show to illustrate that.

    Re: Black & White.

i do agree with him- i had so far seen about two minutes when he was getting some sass.

its never good to go into any situation with a prejudice (unless its something like, say, timeshare).

im going to have to stay up later to catch this again. but, i do agree, im sure he'll find himself in a situation where he does notice racism. especially if they do some sort of double, where he goes to a location as a caucasian, and then again as an african amercian or vise versa.

    Re: Black & White.

I just wonder how the black guy goes about is everyday life. He seems kind of angry and bitter. With that attitude, I'm sure he could interpret the actions of others to kinda of "fit" how he expects white people to treat him, when really those actions are not racially motivated in any way.

I think the black guy should learn from his son- his son explicitly stated that his generation doesn't really see race as very important, if you get along that's cool, if you don't, you don't.

    -totally missed it-

i think its half and half.
he probably has a few good reasons as to why he's so bitter, but to carry that on into every situation is turning him into what he fine-combs. most people that i know have two reasons for their slight racism: brought up that way or one/two bad experiences.

i'd like to know how he and (bruno?) have come to their conclusions on things.

They were on Oprah about a month ago and the white guy said he never experienced racism during the documentary - he thinks it's how he handled himself. And the black guy was still angry. I didn't get the impression that the two families left this experience as friends.

I have to agree with this post and think it's well said. Life, society, other people, your family...whoever...some are going to treat you poorly or unfairly whether it be your race, your gender, your social position, your household income, etc. I figure there's only so much any one person can do about this. Yes you should try to change society as best you can for ALL people but in the end...the only control you completely exert is over your own actions and reactions. If you expect trouble...generally you'll find it (real or perceived).

I think the most freeing, empowering thing someone taught me years ago was these simple words...."consider the source". Three little words that flipped my whole thinking pattern around.

Example: I'm almost 45 and chubby. I know this. Now if someone says to me "Jo you are an old fat broad" I'm going to feel hurt and somewhere inside me will be this feeling that maybe I am an old fat broad. I have a reasonably healthy self-esteem but geesh...that sort of stuff makes anyone feel badly. Someone else might say "Joanna at almost 45 you need to tend your health so you can enjoy all the wonderful years still ahead"....same message...far different delivery and far different reaction in me. It's all about considering the source...why did person #1 feel they should be so demeaning to me...when person #2 empowered me and encouraged me.

It's about them...not me...I'm still almost 45...I still have some weight to drop...and I'm still okay as long as I always remember to consider the motivation behind the message. Putting the responsibility on the proper shoulders frees me to stay more centered and clearly judge the message for it's true worth. Not dependent on the message only but more so on the driving force behind that message.

Hope that made a whit of sense. I'm still pouring coffee down my throat this morning and praying for more clarity LOL.

    Re: Black & White.

I think this show is going to be an eye opener to some people. It's uncensored and these people have to actually live together which is going to arise some drama for sure. One thing I can't figure out is how they film them in stores and in other places, it must be done by hidden cameras or something. It would just seem weird if they were trying to get jobs and there are cameras filming them all the time.

I agree wholeheartedly with you Jo. People can only make you feel inferior if you allow it. Looking on the bright side and try to treat everyone with respect, and you'll notice a big difference. If you are constantly focused on the negative, you'll miss a lot of the good things.
