corn or ball?
Xd
dont you just love it when your other half is interested in what you are?
My boyfriend Tony loves my newly aquired normal BP Crowley, and ive been contemplating getting him a snake for his birthday (in may, so he has plenty of time to catch a reptile show or two and listen to my prattle and read the links i send him). Question is, should i go for another normal ball, a het (pied or albino because i plan on getting one of those anyways *not-entirely-a-gift-for-Tony-lol*), or a corn snake.
I have had corns before and they were a blast.
Ive considered corns because the morphs are brilliant and less of a hole on the pocket, plus they're more active.
He knows im getting him a snake, but as to what he isnt sure.
Any Suggestions?
(also, to those that gave me help on crowleys get up we've got everything set up and switched this past night from glass to plastic- which he loved, and took a little *stroll* between hides and his little humidity-box. we lightly touched on the issue of him eating but he wasnt interested [and myself not all that surprised- will try again next go'round.])

Re: corn or ball?
Well, I'd refrain from getting a het just because you want it to be totally his snake.. don't you?
Corns are great. Easy to find, nice looking, and easy care. Another nice smaller snake is a kenyan sand boa. Attractive and unique.. morphs are also mostly inexpensive.
There are many other colubrid species other than corns to look into as well.. such as king, milk, and other rat snake species.
What does he appreciate most in a snake?

hets: it could totally be his- it just happens we'd be living in the same apartment so access to his het for one aquired at the same time or later wouldnt be too difficult.
king/rat/milk: y'know, ive just never had a strong attraction to those as i have for balls, burms, and corns.
sand boas: since i saw your two males on the forums ive been reading up on them. i doubt he's seen them either so id have to gauge his reaction on those- however, I like them very much and wouldnt mind getting one later on down the road.
appreciation: as far as i know, if its a snake he's willing to look it up and check them out. i couldnt say if he'd prefer a slimmer smaller animal to the thicker. ive mentioned corns to him before, and he seemed just as interested as he did with bps (i think if he had the experience to be around one he'd probably be smitten as well)
hence suggestions. its such a toss up. above all i want an animal he can handle or watch and enjoy. i plan on getting another corn this upcomming march, i guess we'll see then. (i'll also try to look at the kings and such a bit more).

If it were me, I'd go with a really nice corn morph. They're gorgous, fairly inexpensive, and easy to care for, plus I've heard they're not as shy as bps. Also, I guess for whatever reason I just regard corn snakes as more beginner snakes than bps, which is completely rediculous, but yeah, that's just my 2 cents =)

*shrugs*
the only thing i could think of that would qualify for them being 'more beginner' is that they're a bit more hardy when it comes to temps being exact. or so ive been told.
if i catch any sassy morphs in march or april i may just stick to that and wait for hets later on in the year or next year.
*hmmmmmmmm*

Re: corn or ball?
Oh picking a snake is always fun! I got one of our female ball pythons for Mother's Day last year (I'm hoping for another snake this year...hint..hint...to hubby and kids LOL)
Maybe have your boyfriend go through some of the forum threads and galleries to view some of the excellent pictures of various snakes people here have. Then you can research the ones he liked best to see if it suits what he would like in a snake as far as husbandry, handling, size at maturity, etc. For example, my husband Mike likes the albino milksnake our daughter has, however, his very large hands make handling her not that much fun for him as well as he prefers a slower moving, heavier bodied snake...so for Mike a milksnake isn't a preferred gift idea.
Black milksnakes though are a neat snake. They start out tri-colored and then turn a beautiful black over time (one of the only snakes that changes color completely as an adult). They are the largest of the milks and one of the few snakes where the male exceeds the female in size.
So many choices....have fun and let us know what you end up going with.

Re: corn or ball?
If ease of care is an issue, I'd definitely go with a corn. He wouldn't need to stress about humidity and precise temperatures. And as other people have pointed out, you can pick up some beautiful corn morphs for about the same price as a normal BP. I personally love my 3 corns and plan on getting a couple more.

Re: corn or ball?
Corns are easier than BPs.. they are hardier, and they won't refuse a meal.
I mentioned kings/milks/rats because corns ARE a ratsnake. lol There is such a huge variety in the colubrid world.. you may now know what you're missing.
