Breeding Guinea pigs

Ive been reading up on alota sites describing how to breed the guinea pigs.....although i still have a couple questiosn because most of the information i read was about "Pet Guinea Pigs" not feeders lol

First and to me most important question would be if the guinea pigs were locked in one room in Dog crates with door closed could my 7 foot burm smell them 2-3 rooms away??? I think so but im not 100% Sure

Also what would be the best food to feed a guinea pig to plump him up so the snake gets the most nutrition possible???

Also any other pointers possible.......pros and cons welcome to !!!!

I've read about G pigs in the past.. they are much less prolific and slower breeders than rats or mice.. females often have trouble birthing too. Not very efficient.

Yes, the burm could probably smell them.. but it never made any difference with my snakes. I bred rats and mice in the same room as ten snakes for about a year with no problems.. just make sure YOU don't smell like a rodent.

Get some New Zealand White rabbits. They have litters between 12-14 and are quite prolific, good mothers. They are large rabbits, but don't smell much and seem easy to deal with. You could easily buy very large bags of rabbit pellets and hay at a local feed store for a good price rather than going to a pet store. Feed stores cater to the 4H and FFA groups and usually have goood products that will grow healthy rabbits. They would probably be your best bet. My 6ft boa will be on 4 week old 1.5lb rabbits when he gets here to Texas, with the occassional guinea pig here and there.

Yeah that's an excellent idea. NZWs are known for being prolific and fast growing. Less work for more babies.

LOL! We see a lot of wild rabbits around here...very cute little bunnies. And of course, there's always the sweet, pretty ones in the pet stores. As much as my daughter loves snakes, she gets all indignant every time we see a cute bunny and I mutter "Snake food!"

I don't like rabbits much. I guess getting growled at and kicked in the stomach by a 15lb lop ear rabbit got rid of the cute fuzzy feelings.

I always wanted a full time house bunny...they can be quite efficiently trained to pee/poop in specific areas (litter box maybe, newspaper) and not chew on things.

Growing up, we raised rabbits for meat (NUUUMMMMY!) and our old male, Calcutta, in his last winter with us before he past on, lived in the house (as he almost froze in his outdoor cage). He only pooped and peed on some newspapers on the slate floor in the living room. He was cool...still miss him.

No clue what breed of rabbit he was - but his kids were sure tasty!
