Sticky Mess

I'm trying to clean out an older 15gal glass tank. It had some wide strips of masking tape stuck to the glass that has left a sticky mess behind. Any tips on home remedies for removing old tape-gum from glass?

Adhesive remover from the auto section of your local Walmart or alike

Lighter fluid works too - although for a tank, fumes and such...I'd go with a razor blade too. =)

Not too sure on home remedies but Grunge-Off, Goo-off, Goo-B-GOne (ok i made that up) and even fingernail polish remover work for removing adhesive film. I would be too worried to use the fingernail polish remover - it has acetone and other . . . . icky stuff. Not to keen on the WD40 solution either.

I say sandblast that sucker.

Yeah, I remember using lighter fluid when I worked in a frame store and we had to take price-tag goo off of glass. It's not something I have around the house though. I tried a razor and it takes some of it off, but there is still a thin layer of stickiness that won't come off.


I'll look for the adhesive remover that Raj suggested. I'm just get into my projects and I want to finish NOW...not have to stop and go shopping. LOL

Acetone (finger nail polish remover), or you might even try the oils squeezed out of orange/lemon peel. Regular cooking oil might even work, then wash it off with a soapy solution.
