Thumbs down does this sound like cedar?!

hi i was given some red/brown bark chippings with some seldom pieces of whitish wood in through it. its got a really aromatic smell. is this cedar if not what is it? if it was i'd be really disapointed.
it looks kinda like that thumbs down icon only darker red.

There's cedar bedding. Who gave it to you?

Re: does this sound like cedar?!

Definitely sounds like it, especially if it smells very strongly(the nasty stuff makes me sneeze and makes my arms itch).

If you want a good bedding that holds humidity and won't mold(and is still fairly soft), why not try Home Depot or Lowe's. You can get a big bag of shredded/double milled cypress mulch for around $3. You may want to bake it in the oven(250 degrees until dry-will make your house smell foresty) if it is wet, but I've even used it wet and have not had any adverse effects with it(Amani does have softer skin, LoL). It can be a little more difficult to spot clean, but I've found if you keep a sheet or two underneath the mulch, you can see how big the area of urine is and can adequately clean up.

Alternately, you can get aspen. It is very light-colored shavings and can either be chipped or shaved. Shavings are what you are looking for as they absorb liquids better and are softer. Do not get these shavings overly wet for too long of a period, or it will mold(nicht gut). You can find compressed bags of this at WalMary or Petsmart(or other pet store) for a very reasonable amount. I tend to prefer the aspen at Walmart as it is very finely shredded and soaks up moisture like nobody's business.

I hope this has helped a bit!

Re: does this sound like cedar?!

man i had trouble with mice, im crap at tellin the sex, and they bred too much. so i drove sixty miles to "city reptiles" to give him my mice cuz he either needed or just took 'em. neway i asked about the substrate they had on display, there wasn't that much but he gave me two large carrier bags of this mystery red stuff and i thought "great dimes tanks gonna look sweet" then sorta thought again and i just been waitin for a reply on here. they seemed like nice guys. but if i werent bein paranoid i'd nearly think he's tryin to give my snake a RI.

EDIT: darnnit thats the stuff, why the hell did he do that? i gave him 15 mice and still had to pay him for somethin that could silently be killing my snake!! **** i hope he see's this thread cuz i told him the forums i be on.

It's quite possible that he didn't have a clue it would be harmful to your snake. In fact, I think that's a lot more likely than some pet-store guy actually WANTING to kill your animal. As unfortunate as it is, many, many pet-store employees are clueless about reptiles in general and snakes in particular, even if they sell them.

The guys at City Reptiles are really great - give them a call and ask what they gave you - if it is in their cages and I know they keep reptiles - duh!! I would be surprised if it is harmful.

Like I said call em up and check.

Last I checked, I wasn't a "dude"....but if you wish, you may call me "dudette". Anyhow, I was just trying to point out that it's a LOT more likely that either the person giving you the stuff was ignorant about its nature or its dangers, rather than actually wishing to cause harm to your snakes. As you say, he's a professional...why would he want to harm his client base? And as tonymul pointed out, it might not be cedar at all.

Re: does this sound like cedar?!

Stevey, sorry to come off strong here but why are you upset with a pet store? You took an unknown substrate that obviously wasn't even in its' original packaging home without knowing if it was safe or not for your creatures. Yes they should be using something considered safe for reptiles but you carry the ultimate responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of anything in your collection.

How about toning down the cursing a bit? It really doesn't add much to your post.
