I feel the same way too Robin. LOL I'll just take baby steps on my way back to breeding again. It's best (in my case) to just start out slow with designers. After some research, planning and obvious considerations I have tailored a (realistic) project plan that not only my family and I will enjoy but the whole herping community as well (dates subject to change ofcourse). I would like to share that with you folks considering how much I value everyone's input.

2007 - 2008 - Pastel / Super Pastel Project
(1 male, 2 females, 2 norm females - Spider for a later project)

2008 - 2009 - Bumble Bee Project (dependent on a Super from above or else break the piggy bank)
(Super from 1st project, and the Spider, buy 2 norm females)

I feel this plan offers some flexability with out putting a strain on the animals. Plus you can't go wrong with a Triple Threat Breeder like a Bumble Bee and a couple of norm females to keep a steady pace. Well, there goes the plans for the game room (herp room). What do you folks think? Thanks once again for all of your help.

sounds like a good way to start. when i started i had no plan i just bought what i liked and what i had the money for. but i'm happy your thinking it though more then i did it always seems to work better that way. well good luck

you don't need a super pastel to make a bumble bee all you need is a pastel and a spider and a lot of luck. a super pastel and spider will give you a 25% chance for a killer bee

Mike and I are still working on planning out our snake breeding goals as we both have distinctly different preferences. I'm big into very light colored snakes and the possibilities surrounding those, whereas Mike is very interested in the darkest morphs as well as the possibilities with double or triple recessives.

By the way Tony, I'm sorry - I think I failed to greet you when you joined the forum. Hope you are finding it a great place to hang out and we're glad you joined us!

Thanks for the greeting. It's a great place with humble and experienced folks. I decided to hang out here.

Decisions, decisions, decisions... LOL I just figured I'll stick with co- dom and dom genetics for now until I get the hang of things. Though it would be really sweet to produce a unique morph and spend the time trying to prove it. In the meantime I'll just enjoy the ride and hope it turns out well. My only concern is when that (unexpected) little beauty pips out every season; will it be a keeper? My wife supports the hobby and my passion for herps, so the family might grow by just a bit LOL...

having a wife that is supportive really helps. my wife and kids are all in support and help out. it can be a "quality time" thing. just like you're doing, research find what you like, set a goal, and just do it.

a little advice from hindsight

buy from quality breeders
don't settle for the cheapest
buy quality caging/racks/thermostats the first time
invest in what you like, makes tub cleaning enjoyable!

Great advice Vaughn. We've lucked out with some of our snakes coming from less than ideal situations but in hindsight, it's a lot of stress and worry and a much higher possibility of vet costs and problems (not that I won't jump on the next lovely large female ball that ends up in our friendly local pet store though LOL).

It's nice to share this fascination with snakes with Mike and the kids. Our 12 year old daughter is very into the genetic aspects of breeding - her current "hero" is Ralph Davis and his Platty Daddy LOL.
