    Happy Friday the 13th

I thought I'd start another "get to know each other" thread in honor of this infamous date. Do you guys have any phobias or personal superstitions? I figure it's safe to assume there's no snake phobics around, but a lot of people have all kinds of crazy irrational fears and "for luck" habits we just can't seem to help.

    I have 2.

One is a real serious phobia, and that one is eye injury. Stuff like that scene in Bladerunner makes me physically ill, and I'll avoid movies people warn me have "eyeball stuff" in it. The only time I've ever fainted in my life was in a psychology class where the guys were asking for far too detailed descriptions of 'via the eye lobotomies" and I got really queasy before actually keeling over. Poor teacher was SO careful for the rest of the class and kept checking on me, unable to grasp that the guy with the steel rod through his head didn't bother me just so long as it wasn't in his eye. I've been this way since I was really little, and have never experienced or witnessed any real eye trauma. I'm too paranoid and careful. I can't even use contacts or watch someone put them in. It's pretty pathetic.

The other is just a good luck thing. I like silver medallions, and never leave home not wearing one. The one time I did forget I broke my wrist in a stupid roller blading accident (my drawing hand has never been the same, ugh) and I have never left home without it since. It was a different one then, but the one I wear now is customized from QuickSilver. Medusa on one side, an owl on the other.

    Re: Happy Friday the 13th

lol.. well I'll just say that the only time I ever fainted was in science class in 6th grade when we were dissecting a cow eyeball and we cut it and black stuff squirted out of it.

Though.. the actual reason I passed out is because there was NO ventilation and lots of phenol fumes! Yum.

But phobias.. hm.. I don't have an irrational fear of any animals. There are certainly ones I don't want to touch, but it's for a good reason!

I'm not afraid of heights (love roller coasters) I am a bit claustrophobic (who isn't) I love spiders, snakes, rats, scorpions, and basically any other 'creepy crawly' you can come up with.

    Can't think of anything lol.

    Re: Happy Friday the 13th

hmmm phobias..well im not actual afraid of spiders i can see. but when i know there is one in the room and i cant see it then i flip out. also when i see scenes like the one in KING KONG when the bugs where crawling all over them i flip out and get all itchy.

i dont like being in a heavy surf in the ocean. and deep lakes scare me when i cant see the bottom and im in the middle of them. ive had real problems with that cause im a life guard and sometimes i have to go get a distressed swimmer in a lake but as long as im focusing on the victim im ok. plus it help to have the rescue tube. im not afraid of drowning. just...the unknown? i cant really explain it.

    Re: Happy Friday the 13th

I don't have any issues with the 13th. Being that my birthday does occasionally fall on Friday the 13th. In fact it's one of my favorite numbers.

As for fears, I hate being closed in. I'm claustrophobic. I think it stems from having asthma as a kid and the feeling of not being able to breathe. Drowning freaks me out too, but same kinda thing. My husband thinks it's hilarious to teach our kids to jump in elevators to see me freak a bit. I also get dizzy from heights. I don't like flying, but I can. :redfaced: I can not watch horror films. I'm the biggest wuss. Won't do it. Can't make me. (and yes my friends tried to sit on me and make me watch one )

Ah yes bees.. considering an itsy bitsy hornet made my leg turn purple and hard as a rock for two weeks so I couln't walk on it, I don't consider it an irrational fear.

I'm the same as you on this one - except for horror films - I enjoy them at the time but they tend to creep up on me in night

I don't like heights or planes - I went on one again for the first time in 10 years a couple of years ago - and when it took off I was so frightened I couldn't breathe properly I'm sure everyone was looking at me.

Being enclosed is my biggest thing though - I absolutely REFUSE to go into elevators and actually forced (most of) my family to walk up a flight of some 8 stairs once because I wouldn't get in an elevator.
