New to all of this.
Hi. My name is Cheryl... I actually came upon this forum because I'm very interested in getting a ball python. It would be my first snake, and a landmark for me, because I grew up deathly afraid of snakes, and just recently overcame that. But I have been wanting a snake for a while, and I did a lot of research on them... I learned that ball pythons are great for me. At least... the ones I hold every day at the pet store are. They are all so even-tempered and seem to enjoy being held. But I was hoping to learn more about them from people who actually owned them, and had experience with them. Are they really as great as they sound, especially for a first-time snake owner?

Re: New to all of this.
Hi Cheryl and Welcome to the Community.
Ball pythons *can* be good first snakes, however, it can be frustrating, scarey, etc for a first time ball owner who ends up with a snake who for whatever goes reason goes off feed. Some ball pythons just do. If you feel you can deal with that, then yes, a ball is probably for you.
Ball pythons deal with handling well. And are easy to care for when your husbandry is right on. Feel free to browse the forums, I am sure that you will find many topics to help you learn about ball pythons, what you cant find, ask. There are many members here who are always willing to lend a hand when someone has a question.

Re: New to all of this.
Welcome Cheryl. Like Jeanne said they can be great snakes but like anything research is the key and getting it's cage set up and all before you get the snake home.
You might want to consider purchasing from a breeder rather than through a pet store for your first snake. We didn't do that and looking back I feel we basically just lucked out more than anything. Just something for you to think about as a well started baby that's healthy and eating will make your first snake experience so much easier on you and the snake.
As well, if you search this forum you will find a lot of information on enclosure choices, etc. Most of what you'll need you can get outside a pet store as they tend to be way overpriced and may try to convince you to buy a heat rock (please don't) or those silly stick on analog temp/humidity deals that are a waste of cash and never accurate anyways.
You'll find a ton of good information here and a lot of good folks to give you solid advice based on real experience.
