I'm just so paranoid that he'll curl up on the heating pad and get burned even though the accu-rite is saying the surface temp is only 89.

Yeah, you're not the only one paranoid about heat with their herps! Anyway, if this is a major concern of yours, then I suggest you get a thermostat as soon as you can. I just got one tonight, and although I haven't had much time to get acquainted with it, it's already making me feel more secure about leaving it on underneath the glass and paper towels!
