    NTSC DVDs in UK?

    Hi

I just (stupidly) ordered a DVD from the US (I saw it played Region 2 so thought great) but stupid me didn't realize till later it is in NTSC format - any one here in UK know if it works on our TVs? or how to get it to work (well it might anyway I haven't got it yet). Our latest TV is relatively new and has RGB and other various options on it - but I'm not technically minded

    Re: NTSC DVDs in UK?

If your computer has a DVD-ROM you can play it on your computer, but most PAL TV's won't play NTSC stuff. You can get multi-coded TV's that have VCR's/DVD's in them to be able to play all three formats in one TV, but they're quite expensive, last I looked.

It'd be much easier to just play it on your computer, if you have the hardware.

Thanks for that - I never thought of using the computer ... we do have a DVD-ROM there. I've bought DVDs from Canada before and they have worked fine - maybe I'll be lucky.

    Re: NTSC DVDs in UK?

Most new TVs sold in the UK and Ireland now or for the last few years (especially with high-end TVs) would be NTSC compatible as well as PAL. If you still have the manual for your TV that should tell you whether it is or not. If you don't have that, you might be able to find the model on the manufacturers website and that should tell you under specifications or whatever.

If your TV is PAL only, then you should still be able to view the DVD but with a pretty low picture quality and in black and white - you'd probably be better watching it on your PC.

NTSC compatibility is just another thing to look out for now when buying a new TV so we can play those US and Canadian DVDs.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thank you! That sounds pretty hopeful - the TV is only a couple of years old at most so hopefully - I'll go and find that manual - I'm not very good at storing things. It's good they're making them more compatible - there's loads of DVDs I'd like but can't get in this country.

I'm the same. I have a multi-region dvd player, so all I need is a NTSC compatible tv (I must be due a new tv soon!) and I can start buying all those movies that I want but aren't released on region 2 yet!
