Many snakes have a stripe that is on their skin that goes through the eye. It is there to camoflague the eye and to break up the outline. They can sneak up on prey and avoid predators easier that way.

It is pigment, not the pupil. If you shine a light (not too bright!) in the snake's eye, you can see the pupil contract.

Shelby, I borrowed this from another thread. In one of my longings over the RTB I am looking at, I noticed this. I really thought it was cool, one of the things I like about it.

Yeah, it's really cool. My hogg island boa has an amber stripe in her eye. My bloods have an orangeish one, and my dums have silver and dark brown eyes.

BCCs have this pattern {} on their back while BCIs have this pattern )(. This is how you can tell. Also, BCCs have a longer face.

My wife and I are plaining on trying to have a baby soon would it be a bad choice to get a RTB and I live in an apartment right now. Or should i go with a carpet? i want another snake that is easy to care for but not a childs snake so to say.

You could have either a rtb or carpet if you have a baby, just use common sense! RTBs tame quicker and easier than carpets, and are actually more kid friendly generally.

Jim - yes, many BCC have widow's peaks, and most bci don't, but many peruvian and surinam BCC do not have widow's peaks, and I have seen colombian BCI that do. In fact my hogg island boa has a few small widow's peaks.

Just my two cents as a parent of 4 here...take it as you like. I've always tried to not get any sort of new pet in the house during the time I was heavily pregnant or just delivered. Babies are incredibely high maintenance and tiring and it just ends up with the pet suffering your lack of energy during those last months of pregnancy and first months of new parenthood.

Well actually we are trying to get pregnent right now so i have alittle bit of time.Also where is a pretty good place to buy a RTB istead of getting one from a local place?

I decided to go with a BCI. I did a lot of research and would prefer a smaller snake with a better temperment. I am going to get one direct from a breeder though. All the pet stores in town claim thier RTBs are nippy. I am going to go with a 2-3 yr old snake. I did some research on Fauna and think I found a breeder I would like to do business with.

Any suggestions who you're in touch with? No one in MY local area have RTBs avail. so I too am looking at breeders, but being still new in the herp world, I'm still learing who and who not for networking.

Ideas are appreciated!

BTW: Got my new stripe baby < FINALLY! > Now we need to come up with a name. FD suggested Tom Thumb since he's soooooo small (only about 3 mo. old) but I reminded her he won't stay that way for long! & the seller said to try starting fuzzy rats. Huh? I thought you DIDN'T want to go as big or bigger than their thickest girth.

I emailed this guy. He has a good rep on fauna classifieds. Only on negative thing, but that was about a snake he bought and arrived to him dead. He then sold a similar looking snake on a board and someone said he sold the snake she had shipped him and he claimed was dead. The snakes were similiar but not the same in my opinion. I read the thread and it didn't seem he was really at fault in my opinion. I am also open to other breeders of BCI if anyone here has any suggestions. I am not all to impressed with things in my local area all the time. So I decided to go on the net and look, its just that all the horror stories scare me. I am trying to do reseach and make the best informed decision that I can. I did check out a sub adult BP in town this past week, but his eye caps were bad and he was nippy. I am thinking I probably won't buy another snake from a pet store. My next BP will be from Adam probably.
