? about transportation

I am a teacher, and have been asked by some of the other teachers at my school to bring my bp in for classroom discussion. What is the best means of transport, I would have to have him away from his enclosure for about 8 hours....is it doable?

Having only transported our snakes to and from the vet all I can say is make sure the transport container is totally escape proof and you can maintain as close to possible their normal enclosure temperature both in the transport cage and in the environment they will be in during the day out.

Personally I'd also consider the particular snake. Things like is this a well established snake that you've owned awhile and is eating consistently and is completely in top condition healthwise? Is it past the point of being a baby? Is it's temperment fairly stable and not a snake that stressed out easily? Has the snake eaten recently or is in any stage of the shedding process? Things like that would be what I'd be thinking about.

We have some female balls I wouldn't hesitate to take to a public place for something like an eductional purpose but we also have others I wouldn't ever do that with. Our new male ball would not even be a possibility due to his young age and other factors.

I've been working in education for about 8-9 years and its been a great way to be able to educate people about reptiles. I applaud you for doing so on top of being an every day educator.

When I have brought my animals into a school I have just used a secure tub and used a cloth bag/pillowcase to keep the animal in. Put something down in the tub for padding of course such as a towel. I have had to keep mine at work a full day before as well. If you have something to provide temporary portable heat you should consider that as well (heat pad). I might get yelled at for this but I don't worry about bringing water to much...maybe a spray bottle if your that worried about it. I just bring the basics to keep the animal feels secure, and make sure that no one can disturb it while not in presentation.

Definately consider the things Jo mentioned, as exciting as it can be to bring in our animals for show...you have to coniser them first. I have had to cancel a presentation before for one reason or another be it a shed starting, feeding schedule conflict, etc.

As a parent of 4, here's a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you on this forum that are educators. It's a wonderful job you do with not near enough recognition or respect.

Thanks as well for not only doing your regular work but making this extra effort to expose your students to snakes and all other manner of things outside the regular cirriculum. We need more folks like you all in our educational systems.
