Wood thickness

Hi I am building a rack. I was wondering if it was okay to use 1/8" melamine and also if there was a 1/4" gap between the top of the tub and the top of the bottow of the shelf on top( if that makes sense). also if that is too much then what would be okay? the rack will be for balls and possably an RTB or hogg island

You have to explain how this rack is going to be laid out.....I can think of instances where 1/8" would be ok....then I can think of layouts that 1/8" would not provide enough support....provide details.

the total size of the rack not including would thickness would be 2 feet deep by 28.75 high by 3 feet wide.there will b e 5 shelves and will hold 2 tubs on each shelf for a total of 10 shelves.

are you using other wood as a support frame or are you just using the 1/8" melamine?

just the melamine.

then 1/8" will probably not be enough....it would be really flimsy....and hard to nail together....

thanx also have you heard of white board? it is the stuff that you use for dry erase markers. Someone I know is going to build me a rack out of that. they said that it is very strong.
