    My first Ball Python!!

I finally got my first bp home yesterday. He's my first herp too. He's beautiful - nearly 2 feet long when fully outstretched. I've posted a couple of pictures.

I got him set up in his viv (pictured) and expected him to go for the nearest hide for some security. Instead he was very active for the first 5 or 6 hours, exploring every corner of his new home. Later last night though, he found his way into that little cave you can see on the right (cool) side and I have not seen him out of it since. Unless he's been out while I wasn't watching him, he's been in there for about 17 straight hours or so. Is this normal behaviour while he settles in? I'm starting to get a little bit worried.

Also, how long should I wait before I feed him? According to his feeding record, he's been eating every 4 to 5 days, and the last time he ate was October 3rd, 6 days ago now. Should I leave him settle in his new home for about a week before I attempt to feed, of should I try to feed him now as he is due a meal?

    Re: My first Ball Python!!

    First, congrats!

His behavior is entirely normal. I just brought home ten snakes yesterday, and most of them weren't too keen on the hide right away, they wanted to check out their new digs first.

Does your snake have a secure hide on both sides? I stress secure, as I don't see how that log thing can be much of a hide. The darker and tighter the hide, the happier the snake.

Definitely wait a full week to try feeding, and don't even think of taking him out to handle until then! (I know it's hard) Wait 48 hours after feeding to handle.

The log is quite hollow in the middle and he was using it a lot yesterday. I guess it is probably not as secure as the cave though. I will add something on the hot side that is more secure.

    Thanks for the advice!

    Re: My first Ball Python!!

Thanks very much for the welcome!

I have added an upside-down terracotta pot with a drain hole of diameter approximately 1.5" to the warm side. As of yet, he remains in the cave - I don't think he knows the new pot is there yet. I will keep you updated on his activities!
