Re: My first Ball Python!!
First, congrats!
His behavior is entirely normal. I just brought home ten snakes yesterday, and most of them weren't too keen on the hide right away, they wanted to check out their new digs first.
Does your snake have a secure hide on both sides? I stress secure, as I don't see how that log thing can be much of a hide. The darker and tighter the hide, the happier the snake.
Definitely wait a full week to try feeding, and don't even think of taking him out to handle until then! (I know it's hard) Wait 48 hours after feeding to handle.

Re: My first Ball Python!!
The log is quite hollow in the middle and he was using it a lot yesterday. I guess it is probably not as secure as the cave though. I will add something on the hot side that is more secure.
Thanks for the advice!

Re: My first Ball Python!!
Thanks very much for the welcome!
I have added an upside-down terracotta pot with a drain hole of diameter approximately 1.5" to the warm side. As of yet, he remains in the cave - I don't think he knows the new pot is there yet. I will keep you updated on his activities!
