Females and more Females!

Well after the good luck of 2 for 2 with the unsexed balls we had (our 05 and the 03 we adopted) we figured that was that.

Dropped into the pet store a few days ago and they had just gotten in two larger sized ball pythons from two different private owners (pets) over the past day or so. Since they know us very well, they agreed to hold these two snakes so we could get them sexed by our herp vet and if they were females to discuss a deal for them both.

Today was the appointment and folks...it's happened again! 2 for 2! Both females, both healthy though one has a bit of scarring from what the vet says is likely an old burn from a heat lamp inside an enclosure. It's fully healed and should cause her no problems. Neither have mites or ticks and are in good body condition.

The vet estimated the lighter colored female as 2 to 2.5 years old and weighed her as 907 grams empty.

The darker colored female (Mike's favorite as she's quite dark tho is in shed currently) is estimated to be at least 3 years old and weighed empty at 1190 grams.

Both females are in decent shape, didn't mind being handled or probed so we made a deal with the pet store as they haven't had much costs involved with these snakes at all....got them for an amazing price!

So come Saturday we'll be the proud owners of:

1 05 female
3 03 females
1 02 female

Finn has his future all planned out LOL.

Also our wonderful vet took the time to teach me how to probe. She probed them first but did not tell me the results, then I probed and she confirmed that I was right they were both girls! I will go back for a few more supervised probes but I was pretty amazed at how slick it is once you are shown it.

What a day!

Thanks Christie! Mike and I in no way planned to acquire this many females this fast but there is no way I'm about to turn down healthy females that are free or nearly so.

We actually expected these two big ones to be males LOL didn't figure we could hit the odds twice so fast!

Sometimes life is just.............nifty!

Some people have all the luck! I am so thrilled for you! You had to be so excited when you tried your hand at probing and your results were female (and were confirmed by the tech). Let's see, to think it all started with an innocent Mother's Day gift! LOL

Emily, it's too funny as the pet store we've gotten 3 of the 5 females out of doesn't sex, doesn't want to learn to sex and could care less if I want to sex every snake in the store LOL. They were just happy to make a profit and turn over stock quickly and know the snakes will be taken good care of. It's nothing but blind luck they are all females really but I'll take this kind of luck any day!

Actually it was the vet that confirmed the sex Robin. She didn't mind teaching me to probe (also supplied me with my own sexing probes and some ky jelly). As she said - with all these snakes, she'll still get business from me for fecals and so forth LOL. As it was, since we took in females that needed homes, the vet only charged me $12.00 (no visit fee) to sex anyways. I don't know if the vet techs do probing but they are wonderful at firmly but gently restraining the snakes. I love the vet clinic we use from the support staff to the vet techs to the vets and everyone in between.

I will say this after the past couple of months, if you can find a nice private pet store that will let you know when decent healthy bp's come in, especially larger ones it can certainly pay off. The pet store turns over stock fast and you can save a major amount of cash.

That's incredible! You've certainly hit the female BP jackpot. With luck like that I can't wait to see what you get when you start breeding. Congrats. Making me want another so bad though. Must resist. I want a couple more months of experience and to switch to sterilite tub enclosures before I get another.

awesome jo! i've found a few good deals at pet stores too. normal females that are breeding size are worth their weight in gold. sounds like these girls will go next year no problem. time for a rack huh?
