can snakes and cats ever coexist

We just got a kitten a month ago. Don't worry, there's a lock on the snake's cage, so the cat can't get to them, and we make sure the cat's never around when we bring the snakes out. (and freaks, please don't jump down my throat, i have no current intention of letting either reptile or feline anywhere near eachother...) I'm just wondering if anyone thinks/ever heard of the two getting along. It would be nice to have a nice happy house of pets wouldn't it?

I know I'm going to get jumped on for this one, but, hey, this is my experience. My house is a strange little managerie... two cats, three BPs, and one rabbit. All predators of the other. Anyway, my cat (the other is my roomy's), has been told no around the snakes enough that I feel pretty comfortable having the snake out on my bed with the cat in the room. She's pretty cool... she'll just sit and watch Mercedes (my fave BP) crawl around---probably thinking how she can get around me. But I keep a close eye on them both... Mercedes would never strike, but Kate is still young and has a tendency to paw at things she shouldn't necessarily paw at. But she knows that no means and if I tell her, she usually stops what she's doing. And I ALWAYS keep a close eye on both of them, and keep at least two or more feet of space between them: if Mercedes starts crawling towards Kate, I gently direct her elsewhere. Same goes for Kate.


I DO NOT get the baby BP out with the cats around, nor do I get my twitchy male out... he would strike given the chance and if pestered enough. Nor do I get any of them out when Clarice---the other cat---is around. She's youger than Kate and spastic to boot.

The cats think they're rabbits, in any case... they even hop like a rabbit when the bunny is free.

No a snake and a cat will never be playmates or truely get along both may learn to tolerate each other, but should never be left alone when either is out. In some cases like mine the cat could be a meal, but most of the time the cat is more of a threat to the snake.

Well since I've posted before on how I've taught our cats over the years to have some manners around creatures that they might be tempted to prey upon, I guess my view on this is pretty well said already.

Having said that tho any cat, even a well fed house cat, is still a creature with a strong predator/prey instinct. Cats should always be supervised when prey animals are also loose. It's not the cat's fault, it's just instinct kicking in but it can be managed safely for all creatures in the house.

In my case the cat would be the prey item not the snake 2 RTBs and a Burm as adults would be the predator. Now some of my snakes would be the prey item also Bps, milks, and kings. A single sec. could change how your feel about your pet cat or snake.

Whats your issue? If you dont want an answer dont ask a question? This is a open forum for anyone to reply I have not said anything derogatory at all Keep coming at me and I will show you how Hating I can be.

Its very simple Large snake= danger to cat, small snake= danger from cat. can they live in the same house yes, can they be in the same room while the snake is out of the enclosure yes, but you are taking a risk. Its your cat its your snake do what you feel you want, since thats what you will do anyways.

Actually I agree with you Python about your larger snakes turning the tables on a cat, though the cat could certainly inflict damage to the snake (much as any live prey could I suppose).

Where you can in some manner affect a cat's choice about it's prey item by conditioning it over time, I don't believe you can ever accomplish that with a snake so I completely agree that a cat, dog or other pet would not be very safe around any of the larger snakes. And yes a matter of seconds can be all it takes for disaster to strike, that's a risk anyone with different animal species takes.

What I'm saying is you cut down the risk factor as much as humanly possible, taking in the types of creatures you are personally dealing with, so ALL your pets remain safe and healthy.

cats and snakes can be dangerous to one another, and regardless of which one is more of a threat to the other you just have to be careful and use wise judgement.

I have 11 cats, 1 dog and 7 snakes. The snakes are in locked vivs (keeps them in and keeps the cats out). If we have the snakes out when the cats are around we don't let the cats come near as they'd think it is something to play with


When we first got the snakes, the cats were curious to see what they were and did sit in front of the vivs looking at the snakes. Now they don't bother and just ignore the snakes. Even so, I would never take a chance either way and leave them out at the same time. That would be asking for trouble and I love my snakes and my cats. The dog doesn't bother with any of them but I still wouldn't leave her with the snakes either.
