My advice is to go have your snake probed by a herp vet. This should answer all your questions (Is it a male/female, and why is it just hanging out, ect ect ect). I'm not by any means an expert but on the males that I have seen their is usually a white piece of skin that is attached to the pink sides showing so I'm guessing that it is a female.
