My cage is built out of plywood, sealed with outdoor deck stain and a coat of polyurethane, with aquarium silicone around all the edges on the inside. I also put some of those cheap linoleum sticky tiles on the floor of the cage, just to make it a little more water proof. So far, I've had no problems whatsoever!

And yes, you can drill holes into wood
