A not-so-empty Nest
Hmmm how can I be feeling "empty nest" syndrome when I still have 3 more in the nest LOL.
My oldest is moving into an apartment today with her room mates and for some silly reason I'm all teary over it. She's just short of 18 (same age I was when I got my first place of my own) and I know this is the right move for her and all that. Darn it tho my momma's heart is sort of sad today that my first little girl has a home of her own. Silly isn't it.
Anyway, before I get all disgustingly teary-eyed yet again.....any ideas on a nice idea for a present for the new apartment. I was thinking of getting one of those pre-paid Mastercards online so the girls could go out and pick whatever they like or even use it for groceries as they can be used as a debit card or anywhere that takes Mastercard. The nice thing about those is that if she ever gets stuck for cash, I can run to the nearest Rite-Aid and put money on the card for her for a very small fee (much better and faster than Western Union). Does that sound like something a trio of 18-21 year olds might like?

Re: A not-so-empty Nest
Joanna, that prepaid mastercard idea sounds great.....my parents have helped me over the years by sending cash and prepaid cards. I like the prepaid cards better because I am less likely to just spend the money on random things....instead if I get a Walmart card, the only place I can buy stuff is walmart.... When moving into a new apt., It is always the small things that cost so much money....i.e. extension cords, lightbulb, spices for the spice cabinent, cleaning supplies, etc. Those things are not that expensive....but when you move into a new place you kinda have to buy them all at once and it adds up. Hope that helps...and don't worry....my mom was the same way when I left home and everything worked out fine

Re: A not-so-empty Nest
I think empty nest syndrom hit my parents pretty hard because it is just my brother and I, so they lost two at the same time (we're twins). They said that they didn't know what to do with all their time because they weren't frequenting the sports events, musicals, forensics, band concerts anymore. It's been three years now and I think they are starting to like having us gone...now they will just randomly decide to do something and they don't have to worry about anything.
As far as the cash card...
I think that's a very good idea. I've never used one, but from the sound of it it seems like a great way to transfer money as well.
Maybe an effective coping mechanism would be purchasing a new snake to fill the void that your daughter left...

Re: A not-so-empty Nest
Oh Joanna, you are a perfectly normal mommy, and my heart goes out to you. It's terribly hard to let go. I'm having heart palpitations and my son is only starting kindergarden. I think the card sounds totally cool, especially if you can recharge it, which you know will happen. Of course, if you're having to supplement your daughter you probably won't have any extra money for the new snake, but if you do I think that's a great idea too!

Re: A not-so-empty Nest
Yep they are fully rechargeable for a service fee of only $5.00 for any amount up to $500.00 at any Rite-Aid (and some other places I think) and my daughter can access the money immediately.
Here's the website for any of you that might actually be interested in one for your own online purchases or for your grown up kids. They are just like a Mastercard except it's pre-paid (so no nasty shocking credit card bills) and they can be used just like any debit card at an ATM (for a fee of course).
www.mymccard.com
I believe they come in two forms....a $500.00 limit and a larger limit one I think is $2,500.00
I think that's what I'll get her and then I can add cash to it anytime she needs a bit or for her birthday or Christmas, etc. Might be handy for her grandparents as well since they rarely know what to get a young woman her age.
Thanks for the input guys and I think I'm party teary at the shock that I'm actually old enough to have a daughter old enough to be out on her own.*faint*
Hmmmmm Zachman I am looking at two adult corn snakes tomorrow evening that need a new home. That may be just the ticket hehehehehehehehe! (They are actually my early birthday present from Mike and the kids). Mike says it's a helluva lot easier buying me gifts now that I'm so into snakes LOL. But then he's getting the beautiful baby lemon pastel from Adam for his father's day, birthday, christmas and any other gift giving occasion for the next year!
