Survey: Perceptions of Snakes for Conservation Research

This survey is being conducted by a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Florida in the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Department. The project is looking at the impacts of media, religion, and background on the perceptions of snakes (positive, negative, and everything in between). Along with this the project is investigating features people look for when determining anthropomorphic values of different snake species! The goal is to improve outreach and Conservation initiatives centered around human-snake conflict.

The survey takes 5-10 minutes and is completely confidential.

Funding has been minimal so please pass this around as much as possible!

Fun survey, & a very good cause too, thanks!

The only thing that took me a bit longer was the option at the end for additional comments- I had to admit (& elucidate) that this survey was "preaching to the choir" for me.

Yeah. While it's important that our voices are heard, if the only people responding to this survey are those that frequent reptile forums, their data's going to be a little bit skewed.

I found it in a popular non-reptile forum on Reddit so it's got plenty of non-herp-world exposure.

Re: Survey: Perceptions of Snakes for Conservation Research

I found the questions about how trustworthy I view snakes thought provoking. If by trustworthy you mean that I trust a snake to not bite me, then I would say that my trust of snakes is pretty low, and I rated most of the snakes in the survey pretty low for that reason. I love snakes, but it isn't because I find them trustworthy.

I also found that question a bit strange & hard to answer- I ended up commenting about that too. My answers reflect me, & my extensive experience with snakes, so while I don't blindly find all snakes to be completely "trustworthy", I rated all of them pretty high but not perfect. Snakes have taught me, over the years, that trust is a 2-way street, & I've done some pretty trusting things with snakes that I probably shouldn't have, but again, that's me, & "your results may vary". Actually snakes do much better than humans if I had to rate them, now that I think about it-

I rated mine as all trustworthy because I trust that some absolutely will take a swipe at me if I don't do my job properly and hook them first.

Yeah, there's that angle too (overall predictability), though the survey wasn't about our own snakes.
