It was ironically (as it would've been the biggest of my Ts eventually) my smallest sling by a decent margin. I had a feeling I was going to have trouble with one of them at some point since they're harder to keep alive but, it still hurts...

For sure. Too bad your little "inner voice" was right. I really doubt it was anything you did- especially since this one was so small. That predisposes to survival issues.
