Wood stains are generally toxic, so I agree that sealing it with a clear coating that dries non-toxic is a good idea- make sure it has completely dried (off-gassed, so no odors remain) before using for a snake. If there is a tiny place on the stick that your polyurethane coating misses, it could continue to off-gas toxic fumes from the stain- so just be careful.
