Re: Honey and constipation?
Hello everyone,
Last night I soaked her and let her swim. She let out a good amount of urate. I held her for awhile then put her in her enclosure. She crawled into her hide like she does every night. The vet even wrote me back and said he isn't concerned about her not eating at this point yet. Everything looked good on X-ray and she was expected to make a full recovering.
Fast forward to an hour ago. I went to check on her and found her passed away. I am devastated. I can't stop blaming myself and I feel horrible. These snakes live for years and I couldn't even give her 6 months. I feel so absolutely horrible. I wasn't expecting this outcome. Especially from all the positive things that were said about her health. I'm sorry I couldn't help her🥺

Honestly, JJpeep, I was so stunned when I read this post of yours earlier today that I felt it in the pit of MY stomach- really sad disbelief- I didn't expect this outcome at all either. You & your vet both tried to help her- & you both did the best you could- sometimes, for reasons we cannot understand, it's just not enough.
May your sweet little snake rest in peace, & I hope that in time, you find comfort too. All your other snakes still need you.

Re: Honey and constipation?
Thank you for understanding. It has been a day of grief for sure. I didn't even expect my vet to call so early and be so upset as well. I am surprised I got through the conversation. I know what you mean about the pit of your stomach thing. I have had it all day. I still keep going over and over, was she cold, was she hot, was I not offering food enough? But everyone including the vet said what was done should have been done. So I guess I have just have to feel the emotions I am feeling to get through it. Yes the other snakes do need to be taken care of. You are right. One of our cornsnakes escaped after Thanksgiving. We were beside ourselves. Trying to find him. He actually showed up on our blinds in the window 2 weeks later. We just got that relief and we're so happy. This is a more permanent feeling, I'll never get her back. I was so excited about starting breed (not wanting to be a big breeder). Just something we wanted to do for a long time. This has me rethinking it. I don't know if I have the strength to get through stuff like this. I get too attached. I mean what if she would have made it into adulthood and I bred her and she got eggbound and something happened. I probably would feel worse. Cuz I put her in that position. I have a beautiful Plastel Butter Yellowbelly who eats great and is getting so big. She is over a year old I was going to breed to my male banana cinnamon butter that just turned a year old the day I took this little girl to the vet. In a couple of years of course cuz they are still young and need to grow more. But this whole thing has blue really sad and not sure I want to do it.

Well, give it time. You might not want to breed snakes, just saying. Because it does add risks, not to mention the eggs/offspring. Snakes un-bred tend to stay healthier & live longer- as pets only.

Re: Honey and constipation?
Exactly what I was thinking. I bred parakeets for a long time. Parrots are vicious when in season to breed. I got very attached to my breeder birds. When one would pass I would grieve like this. Also bred leopard geckos with the same feelings. I know the risks, I get what you are saying whole heartedly. I loved the process, I loved how interesting it is to see animals come out of eggs and it really gave me something to look forward too. It enriched a good part of me. That is why I was going to get back into it. My Dad got a couple colonies of leopard geckos started and his corn snakes. I decided on ball pythons because we never bred snakes and I just think they are beautiful. I grew up with snakes. My Dad always had some kind of species of snake. I have to admit, I was always kind of afraid of them. No in a phobia way, I just didn't like to pick them up. Since getting the latest batch of snakes (we haven't had any in awhile). I got over that fear and I really grew to be comfortable with them. This little snake helped me with that. Maybe that's why this hurts so much as well. Anyways, thank you all for listening to me ramble. It is my way of working through this I guess.

For sure, there's both pro's & con's to breeding. I love seeing new little snake faces peeking out of their eggs too, & then watching them thrive. But parting with most of them later- worrying about them being well-cared for- that I can do without. And then knowing the health risks of breeding the adults too. Anyway, you have time to think it over.
You're lucky to have grown up with a father that kept snakes- I wish I had. I can sure see why this little one was so special for you. We learn things from the animals in our lives- not just the other way around. She'll always have a place in your memory, in your heart. I wish she'd had more time.

I think worrying about if the babies get taken care of would bother me the most. I have thought about that àctually. Plus parting ways with them. I would always be thinking about that. But like you said, pros and cons.
When I was really little, my Dad had a pair of garter snakes, that actually produced babies. All the babies were sooooo tiny and adorable. I wish I would've been old enough to remember that clearer. Those are the first snakes i remember as a kid. Was the first snake that bit me too. Lol. I had to have been about 5. A long long time ago. Anyways, yes I wish she had had more time with me as well. I think it is something that will stay with me forever. Thanks again.
