    Zinc might have a different answer, but I'll give you mine, as I use some tree-bark furnishings & natural branches with my snakes too.

    If it's too funky, I toss it, because wood is porous. You COULD, ahead of time, use an animal-safe non-VOC waterproofing sealant to improve the "lifespan" of these items if you want.

    Normally, I just wash it off (in water, a bit of mild soap if needed), let it dry, & then spray with the same diluted chlorhexidine I use to clean tanks & all, let that dry without rinsing, & replace in home.
