You know I had a thought and wanted to make sure you were aware of this. Not all power strips are surge protectors. They look very similar but they are not all the same. Maybe you has a power strip and that's why it fried the tstat.
It was definitely a surge protector. An expensive one. I'm pretty sure it was rated for 2,000 Jules.
