Screen cover on a 20g long tank
I'm picking my little guy Kevin (ball python hatchling) up on Wed, I'm just putting the finishing touches on his enclosure. My concern with a screen top is heat loss, so I'm thinking of putting aluminum foil or some other type of barrier. over of the cover. I obviously won't cover the whole thing, I need room for the ceramic heater above the tank. The other though is a plexiglass cover a hole where the ceramic lamp is. One is obviously more expensive, but I want to do what's best. Thanks in advance.

I had a carboard cutout that fit the top that I then covered in foil. I used that for years until I got a house and was able to have a snake room so it was not longer needed.

It's not only heat you're keeping in by covering much of the screen top, but for BPs (& some other species) it's also the humidity.
Both plexi (expensive!) & foil, also many other materials, will equally prevent air-flow. It's your choice- one isn't 'better than the other'- mostly a matter of preference, including appearance.
You might prefer foil, because it's lighter weight, for example. Try it & go from there if you're not happy with it. (Foil also tears easily though.)

You are correct, I should have mentioned that as well. I will have to see what the humidity does. Texas can be funny that way. I know in WI, winter was rough because maintaining humidity took some extra love especially in 1986 when I had Elvira.

Where in Texas are you? Down here in Houston I don't do much of anything for my Ball for humidity. I had to before I had a designated snake room but now that I do my Ball is in the same screen top tank without the cover and I have great sheds.
