    Definitely a consideration. If you’re allergic to bees or any other insect bites I’d stay away from them.

    That being said, they’re rear-fanged venomous so they really have to chew on you to get anything into you. Most of the time it’s mock strikes, and I’ve found as they get older they really mellow out. I’ve kept several and they’ve been extremely rewarding to keep.

    Of course every snake is different though, and while some folks recommend them for beginners, I wouldn’t. Younger hognoses can be terrible eaters and for a newer keeper, heck even one with a little more experience, it can be pretty stressful. Hognoses are the only snake I’ve ever had to assist feed, and it’s not even a little fun.
