I've tried the crumbly stuff too, & don't care for it for the same reasons- very messy!- though it recycles nicely into my garden. It also tends to get moldy here in my fairly humid climate.
I like & am now using Reptibark...it has a nice texture that also offers better traction for snakes needing a humid substrate. Just put down a "plate" when you feed. (doesn't have to be a real plate, can be a box lid for example)
