40 gal. tank. what size light?

alright so iv had this 40 gallon thank for a couple months now, atleast 3 or 4. all i have for heat right now is like a 50 watt basking light. its around 90-92 degrees f. in the basking spot during the day. and usually around 75-82 on the cool side during the day.
the question is, i have a 150 watt capacity clamp lamp, and a 150 watt basking bulb from zoo-med, or whatever it is. would this be overkill for my 40 gallon tank if i where to use it?
    thanks for all your help!

I assume you are keeping a Ball Python in the tank? That's a big tank to try to heat with a bulb alone. A 150 watt bulb will probably suck all the humidity right out of the tank. The only way I have found to maintain humidity between 50% and 60% in a larger set up is with under tank heat. Most important though is that whatever you try you should have it set up and maintaining stable temps and humidity BEFORE snakie goes in.

Re: 40 gal. tank. what size light?

You should get an under tank heater or 11" flexwall, and use it with a thermostat, or at least a rheostat. BPs don't need special light and it will suck all the humidity out of the tank. Also, you'd have to turn the light off for 12 hours at night, so your temps would drop way too low at night, and the snake will get sick. You want to heat 1/3 of the floor to 90-95 and keep it that warm 24 hours a day. If you need the suppliment that with a lamp on the cool side, use a low watt standard bulb on a timer, or a piece of heat tape on the cool side using a different thermostat or rheostat.

yeah iv had that one light on a timer set on 12/12. but i know what you mean about the humidity. its kinda a problem anyways. i already have some of the top covered but i think im about to redo that and go to petsmart and get an undertank heater. forget that 150 watt. thanks everyone for your help.

Yeah I used to use 100, then I went down to 60, and now I'm all the way down to 40watts! So I'd say "yes" that would be tooo much heat, unless you can raise it up some! or you attach a thermostat to it... that might help!
    Good Luck!
Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings.

Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'?
