Suprise Skink Eggs! Help?!
So this afternoon I was checking on my female western skink and was pleasently surpirsed to find a random clutch of eggs! These are my first reptile eggs ever so I have no equipment for them what so ever. I had no idea she was gravid, but I had seen her putting on a little weight. Has anyone ever breed these before or a similar species? I read that the females do take care of the eggs so I am kinda just leaving the eggs care up to her right now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [IMG][/IMG]

Have no experience with skink eggs, only snake eggs, but if you search "how to hatch skink eggs" you'll find stuff. With any luck, Reptiles magazine might have some
articles around too.
That's really cool, btw...I hope you hatch out some little "skink-lettes"...

BTW, don't turn them...keep them in the same orientation as found- I'm assuming they're like snake eggs, they can drown if rolled over.

Re: Suprise Skink Eggs! Help?!
That's what I assumed as well. I accidently nocked one of them over when I first found the clutch, so I candled it and got it back into the right position.

I've found blue skink eggs under stuff on the farm. I leave them if I can or the kids put them in a small plastic critter keeper with moist peet or mulch. Normally 90%+ hatch. In the wild the female skink hangs around. I've even had them move eggs that I left.
Good luck!

Re: Suprise Skink Eggs! Help?!
She seems to be doing a pretty good job with caring for the eggs right now. I peeked in her cage this morning and saw that she had lightly burried them, and was curled around them. I really hope they hatch. I am guess that the babies will be pretty small since the eggs are only about 1/2 inch long.

Re: Suprise Skink Eggs! Help?!
I figure I would do a quick update on the skink eggs.
I check on them about every 5 days or so just to make sure none have gone bad or something like that, but I also don't want to disturb the eggs so I am keeping contact to a minimum. They all are doing great so far, and mama is doing a great job watching over her eggs. Usually, she is either curled around them or right beside them. Hopefully, in the next few weeks I'll have some little babies to show everyone.

24 to 55 days till they hatch. Mom will leave by the third day after hatching, so the books say. Have fun with them.
Good luck!
