Just sounds to me like he's feeling a little insecure...it's a very normal thing for some snakes to do, not to worry. And if he's on a smooth surface, that would do it also, as
snakes cannot move (hardly at all) like if you put them on a smooth glass table, for example. They have different ways of moving, but all are facilitated by traction...they
need some rough surfaces to push off of (like you do with your blades when ice skating).
