This is exactly what I did to convince my parents to let me have a snake. One of my mom's objections was also the smell, and what persuaded her was taking her to a reptile-specific pet store where she could see (and smell) the enclosures for herself, as well as talk to some of the employees who owned snakes and had actual experience with their lack of odor.
