Yes, he should have said "venomous" to be accurate, but then again, if locals typically refer to such snakes as "poisonous", it makes sense to tailor one's responses so the
less-educated masses understand when being quoted. He wasn't speaking to a herpetological group here, but for the public.

Yeah .. if in doubt it’s simply best to not EAT the snake
