I use a DYI wooden frame to elevate my tub so the UTH isn't touching the floor. I use a Zoo Med UTH and the manufacturer's label says it requires space underneath to prevent overheating. Even if your UTH stays at ~90F temps, it will probably discolour any wood it sits on directly over time, so if you have your tub on the floor or some wooden furniture, that's another reason to leave space.
