I have two from the end of last season that are sisters and very different. Obviously the bigger one never misses a meal but their color is way different as well. I believe the variation is just luck of the draw.
I would say your darker one won't stay that dark simply because it needs to have its first shed and it will lighten up quite a bit just from that.
