Should I Switch to a Tank?

Hey all, just wanted some opinions.

Dumpling has been in a tub for the entire time he's been with me (a few months) and he's grown nicely! I know that BPs thrive in small spaces, but I've noticed him coming out at night and poking the top of the tub, and I think he's been catching his nose in some of the holes which has caused a little bit of irritation on his face. I'm wondering if he's just active or stressed.

My question is, there's an Expo coming up on Sunday and I was thinking of picking up a 20 gal tank. It would give him more room vertically, which he seems to want based on how diligently he bops the lid of his tub. I know it's not impossible to maintain everything required for a good setup when using a tank, but I'm still nervous to drop the bucks and have him be even more stressed or depressed. I'm interested in the enclosures that open up in the front.

So, opinions. Do you think he's stressed or just being active? Should I go forward with the switch?

I wouldn't. Tank screen tops can act like cheese graters on snake noses. I'd get a larger tub like the Hefty 100-qt, which he'll be fine in for life.

I second the bigger tub. Or save up for a PVC enclosure if you want a better display-type cage that won't make husbandry difficult to manage. Glass tanks CAN work, but also can have more difficulties. If it isn't something you have on hand already for no cost, it is much more worthwhile to spend the money on a better suited enclosure.

A 36"x24" would be good, or a 4'x2', either 1 to 1.5' tall. Too much taller and heat can become difficult to manage on ambients unless your house stays fairly warm year around.

PVC + an RHP for heat works fantastic for snakes like boas and ball pythons.

There is nothing wrong with tanks or which ever route you choose. People have a tendency to push what works best for them. If you truly set on a tank, many keepers on here can more then help you set it up properly, obviously a cage designed to hold a reptile will be much easier to set up. But the choice is yours, and their suggestions mean well. Me personally, I have four 20 long tanks for my four boys. I am a big fan of home humidifiers, and if you go for a glass tank I would avoid CHE’s they drain humidity worse then an bulb of equal heat in a tank set up. Best of luck, Peace. Tanks or vivs can both work marvellously well if you read up on how to set them up well ..

Plenty of suitable hides , some branches as Royals love to climb in evenings !!

Snakes look amazing in tanks / vivs , it’s so great to watch them slithering around the branches and generally exploring their home .

I hate it when I read of Royals plonked in a plastic tub with a hide and a little water dish ... then the owner calls them a ‘pet rock’ as they don’t do anything !!

I've been using glass tanks for almost 20 with great results. You'll hear plenty of people bash glass, but honestly millions of reptile keepers use it with success.

Don't get me wrong, pvc display enclosures are fantastic, but not cheap.

There are tons of tricks to help get glass dialed in properly, then it's just maintenance.

I'd happy to help you get started and setup nicey nice if you decide to go glass.

Thank you so much for your input everyone! I have money to exchange from an international trip, so once I do that I'll be able to budget more efficiently. If I end up going with the terrarium I'll make sure I have everything up to par, tested and in order before moving him.
