I was definitely wary of them, if I came across a snake while hiking I would give it a wide berth. I also once almost stepped on a snake sunning itself on a rock while camping and that did scare me a bit because I thought if I had stepped on it I would have been bitten.
Now that I know more about snakes and can recognize different species, I can confirm that I have never seen a venomous snake in person. The ones I've seen before were most likely garter snakes. I probably wouldn't be nearly as concerned now if I saw a snake in the bush in my area, but I would still keep my distance, more for its comfort than mine though.
I think the moment when I first held my friend's corn snake was when I really began to think they were pretty cute and cool. I didn't discover ball pythons until I read a story with a cute constrictor snake in it (it was a BP!) and looked up species of snakes to try and figure out what kind it was. Then I found RoyalConstrictorDesigns on YouTube, saw a pied ball python, and immediately fell in love![]()
