Heat tape in an RBI rack question

Setting up a tub in the rack for my ball python. It’s a little tricky and I couldn’t find info on what thermostat setting makes sense to get to a nice hot spot. If I want to get his hot sside up to 90 it seems like I may have to set the tape to 110 or 115. Is that insane? I have no idea. I’m also using coconut coir substrate which tends to take more to heat up.

I have mine set to 93 which puts the surface over the tape at 90. Are you using a heat gun to check the surface of the tub and not the surface of the substrate? The goal is to heat the surface of the tub, not the substrate.

Yep. Maybe mines just heating up slowly. Good to know your numbers.

Also, make sure that your thermostat probe is making good contact with the heat tape. I found that the metal tape works best for me. After a while electrical tape or duct tape will release and throw off the probe reading.

It depends on the temperatures inside your house, as well as the size of the racks. I have multiple sizes, all set to different temperatures. Do you have a heat gun? My biggest rack is set to 97 degrees currently.
