Homemade rock hides nervous about some things!
I made these rock hides out of the Great Stuff expandable foam. I spray painted them then added a little detail with craft acrylic paint. My concerns are fire hazards and fumes. It’s in a glass aquarium and one will be close to the a che and light. The other concern is will the spray paintbe safe after drying. these things look great but I don’t want anything bad to happen to Mike Tython. I don’t have tapatalk on this phone so I can’t post pictures but I’m generally proud of these things lol

I would be weary of spray paint. I used non toxic acrylic paint and sealer on mine without issues.

That stuff is lethal. All flammable chemicals. I'd say get it out of there and don't let any animal near it! At least the stuff I used years ago. Maybe better now, but I'd be leary.

If you can smell fumes it doesn't belong anywhere near your snake! You need to use no-VOC non-toxic paints & finishes ONLY, & they must be dry & completely
done "off-gassing" (no smell remaining) prior to use for the health & safety of your pets. (VOC = "volatile organic compounds")

Re: Homemade rock hides nervous about some things!
I should have stated in the original post that these are not and have not been in the tank yet. I would have never put them in there if I could still smell fumes. I do a lot of spray paint art and have quite a stash of colors, so it was second nature to grab a can and start letting it fly. I then realized this might not be the best idea. So I figured I’d ask the experts then I also thought “man I’m gonna get roasted for this one lol”. Has anyone had any bad experiences with the spray foam I mentioned. all this was pretty cheap so I have no issues doing it all over again. If there’s something better out there by all means let me know.

My daughter's chameleon is in a huge former curio cabinet covered with spray foam, then coated in silicone paint with coconut substrate stuck to it. He's thriving and it's been a couple months. We did let the cabinet air out very very well for about 2 weeks befo putting him into it.
2 BP's, one ratsnake, 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 small caged birds, 7 chickens, and a toddler in a pear tree

Is your spray foam in close proximity to any heat lamps and what brand did you use

Re: Homemade rock hides nervous about some things!
I spray paint my PVC PIPES with wrinkle texture paint.. then i apply a clear coat so i can clean them easily. I let them dry for several weeks so there was no smell at all. They have used them for years and climb every night. As far as spray foam i have no clue. I only use RHP’s so i have nowhere near the temps CHE’s or Bulbs get up to. Id say no to a foam that can melt, burn etc... if your using that kind of heating. I know several people that use spray foam in large PVC Enclosures to design rock walls, but all use UTH/Heat tape and RHP’s.

FYI... most all of the backgrounds used in tank displays are spray foam and painted.
As long as the paint has gassed it isnt a worry and it isnt too close to the CHE it wont deform.

Thanks for the update. Did the spray foam insulation one summer and that has me spooked from any spray that's out there.
