    Heat source for Sterilite bin?

I am in the process of trying to set up a small Sterilite bin in an attempt to make my little bp happier and to regulate the temp and humididty easier. The bin is 12” by 8” by 6”. I got an UTH that is 4” by 7” so it covered ⅓ of the bottom. I sandwiched my thermostat between the mat and the bin, but the mat won’t stick. I’m guessing because the thermostat probe is kinda big and the mat is small. Tips? Suggestions for a better way to heat?

    Backstory:
I bought a 6 mo. old bp from a convention and was told he was already eating f/t. I brought him home to a 40 gallon tank with no thermostat bc the ppl at my petsmart don’t know and I trusted them too much. After much more research and the help of this website, I am a lot more informed but still have a lot to learn. After a week of adapting to his tank, he ate the first two weeks I fed him; f/t hopper mice. He did not eat for 2 months after that. I cluttered up his tank, insulated the sides, and started using a temp gun and thermostats, and he ate! Then he shed the next week and didn’t eat, but I was hopeful he’d eat the next week. Now it’s been two more weeks and he hasn’t eaten. He has now turned 9 mo. old and only weighs 100 grams.

    .
I use foil tape to adhere my UTH's to my enclosures (both a PVC and a sterillite tub). I also use two UTH's one for each end to create the surface temps I need. Both are using a thermostat which is a must!!!!

So you would recommend two UTH even though the bin is pretty small? What wattage?

I guess it all depends on what your surface temps are on the cool side. I've always struggled to achieve temps higher then the mid 70s so having two UTHs gives me that piece of mind. If you go that route, I wouldn't think you would need anything with a considerable wattage. It's more how the UTH fits on your bin and having a thermostat probe monitoring the temps.

Re: Heat source for Sterilite bin?

As long as your room is above 75 degrees you wont need additional heat source you will only need 1 uth. Im currently setting up a tub for my little guy. I have my big one in a tub already. Im actually transfering to tub from glass enclosure for many reasons. Anyways just make sure you have a thermostat hooked up the prob needs to be sandwiched between the tub and the uth. Also like others i use foil tape so i can re use my adhesive uths all the time so much easier. Trust me ive pulled them off with adhesive 2 times its no fun at all and takes long. Heres a pick of one i did. U just use foil tape to attach it to the buttom of the top its so much easier haha. Also make sure u check temp at the plastic not the substrate. Not to sound rude or anything i just have had alot of issues and alot of people helped me here. Infrared tempature guns will be your best friend too for checking the heat mat.
