found that on lllreptile.com. its like $40. is it any good? would it be a "wise buy"?

Hovabators can be set up to work very well ... but scrap the internal thermostat and buy something that will work. The one it comes with isn't worth much.
I know a lot of people who have had success using them with an external thermo.

Just a guess, but you could just crank up the internal one really high, and plug the power of the hovabator into an external proportional thermostat which is set at the desired temperature, with the sensor inside the incubator of course.

Somebody else I was talking to recommended getting an insulated fish packing box (it's foam, what tropical fish are packed in when they are shipped places) and using that for a bottom. Also, they screen off the section underneath the heating element to provent any possible burns.
