    Re: So this just happened!

Wellllllll Daenerys is gonna have to wait a bit to have belly heat along with Jupiter(formally known as Opal) his jumpstart gave out as well....both were plugged in directly to the wall and not a power strip....no surge protection....lesson learned. Off to spend more money lol ... and I just spent 120$ on bugs today grrrr...now to spend even more on two more UTHs and two more Jumpstarts....or can I just slide the jumpstart probe back under the UTHs that’s already there? It’s gonna be a while before I can afford the Herpstat 6 I tried getting some credit and nothing, by the end of month I’ll have enough.

A power surge killed it. If The jumpstart was in a surge protector, it may have been ok.

Fortunately, Daenerys wasn't harmed. Hi/lo alarms are just another layer of protection.
I understand that as well, but how does an auditory alarm help you if you're not home... maybe you're out running errands or at work?
Bottom line is Aerries needs a better thermostat and he needs to plug it to a power surge.

    Wow, very VERY scary !!

Thank god it went well !!

To me the Jumpstarts are a great thing...as a temporary fix for someone that cannot afford to get the expensive thermostats just yet. They are certainly better then nothing.

For the longterm on a beloved collection though, you want something that has more fail safe then a Jumpstart.

I too have a ultratherm heating pad under my display cage and they aren't supposed to get very hot. But having substrate can already change the maximum temp by trapping heat. So while it is safer, I still prefer a better thermostat.

Heat tape (usually used in racks) should absolutely be controlled by a GOOD thermostat, same for the UTH that can run in the 150's if wide open.

Yeaaaaa....I have the zoo meds... luckily I have lamps still in storage that I’ll use for the time being but my ambient temps in the house are 78 and the reptile room sits at 81. In Daenerys enclosure it’s between 80-82 she’s going to be fine. Last night was feeding day and she took her weaned rat with power as always. I love watching her strike her mouse.

Aerries, I'm happy for you and your snakes that you caught it quickly and your animals are safe!!

This is a PERFECT example of why it's important to check enclosures/equipment daily.

    Nice job, Aerries!!!!

Thanks...I can tell you it happened in the morning (the power surge) and I know from experience that these pads take no time at all to reach higher temps. I was screaming at my husband yesterday when I found everything out cause he complained how expensive the tstat was going to be. Lol I said “you want Bubbles to cook himself?” (That’s his beep) I got a very quick agreement to get the herp6 lol
