I think we tend to think like this in the hobby because captive snakes live like royalty compared to their wild brethren. They have access to optimum heat gradients, regular food, clean water, safety from predators and illness etc.
Those massive wild specimens are older animals that have grown slowly and steadily over a long time on an infrequent diet.

I just got my shipment of Zoo Med Cypress today and got all the little boas, BP and dumerils on it and they seem to love it so far. Gina and Louie were pretty cautious at first but those 2 are scared of any new substrate they have never sat on lol.
