One of the major tv networks, I can't remember which one for the life of me, aired hockey years ago and tried to fix that issue.

That was Fox Sports, here's a clip showing what it looked like:


And I agree, the more you watch, the easier it is to see. Also understanding the rules really ups the enjoyment of the game IMO and it's even more amazing seeing an NHL game in person.
