Where are your display cages located?

I’m very interested in where people keep their display cages and how they incorporate them into a “grownup” decorated scheme.
I started with an office and cages tastefully decorated and placed. Then I had to relocate my office furniture to make room for more. Then I added them to my laundry room/new office area. Then I did an area of my basement and moved everyone down there. And I don’t like it. I miss having them around me and hanging out, especially for a spur-of-the-moment handling session. Having them in the basement makes it feel like more of a scheduled event to bring one upstairs and then going up and down to hold different ones... it’s just not the same ease-of-access, if that makes any sense.
My former snake room has become my guest bedroom. I’m 54 and have a standard, adult living room that you’d see in any older person’s home, a basically furnished guest bedroom, a grown up bedroom with a bedroom set... what about a stack in the living room? It just doesn’t seem to fit in as part of the decor...
How do people set things up without making the room/house look like a college student’s first cheap apartment? Could I put a nice looking stack in the guest bedroom? Is that too off-putting? Would covering the stack when a non-snake person stayed over in the room be sufficient to make me a thoughtful host? This is very important to me. Please give me some input. Thanks!

How many enclosures are we talking here? 2? 5? 100?

If you are worried about clashing with the decor then get a contractor to build custom walled in enclosures that go with the house. It shouldn't be more than $20,000. Probably the same as custom kitchen cabinets.

Otherwise just stick them where they are best kept at a constant temperature and get stacking PVC enclosures on a custom built stand.

I keep mine on tables in a nook in the dining room we no longer use. Since we walk past them every day from the bedroom they are easily accessible yet avoid being in guest's faces who might not be snake friendly.

Re: Where are your display cages located?

I wanted to put our 3x2 display cage in our guest bedroom too, since it was too big and cluttered our daughter's room. My wife, however, wouldn't have it. She actually received confirmation from some routine guests that they would not want to sleep in the room with the snake. I can understand how it could be off-putting to some people.

We ultimately agreed it would go in our Den which turned out to be a much better option. It gets far more visibility from everyone in there and it's a lot easier for me in terms of feeding, cleaning and maintenance. This is the only pic I have at the moment, it's in the corner of our den next to the TV/entertainment center & sectional couch. An added bonus is if there's ever an extended winter power outage, I can crank up the nearby fireplace to heat the room.

Re: Where are your display cages located?

I'm probably not the grown up you had in mind when you asked this question since I'm just nineteen but I'd like to answer your question anyway.
First of all I don't think covering the stack would be enough for a non-snake person and I'm not sure if that would go with the aesthetics that you are trying to achieve. Is there a possibility to put the snakes in the hall or is too small? What about the dining room or is that too unpleasant?
Also why don't you work a bit on the stack to make it fit into the living room.
I personally keep my snake in my bedroom. In order to make his (new and not used yet) terrarium fit into the style of my apartment, I painted it and chose a specific theme for the decoration inside even though there's still a lot to do. Maybe it could be a small project for you too. Or you could also get something custom build.

I keep mine in my living room. I have a wall/corner I took over. If done right, it looks fine. (I have a picture in my profile). I was going to go with Vision cages, but went old school because my wife and I like the way the tanks and the shelves look. I find a lot of people think it looks great, and gives them a chance to see snakes aren’t all that bad. For a long time I used neodesha cages in my living areas. Yes, it is nice when you can display them and have them around you.

I've seen some people do custom woodwork to make an enclosure or to enrobe the outside of pvc cages to look more like furniture (with millwork, wood that matches the rest of the furniture, etc.) Usually they will do nice planted setups or setups with faux decor that looks natural and pleasing. It ends up looking kindof like a nice display aquarium in a wood cabinet stand.

I've also seen people use an existing nice wooden shelving unit and finding a cage that will fit on one of the shelves so that you have non-reptile things above and below it to make it blend in more.

I think the most awesome looking displays are those built into walls (similar to some aquariums) but this requires a lot of contracting skills and could be complex depending on if you want to access the interior from the back side or front and if there is a room directly behind where you want it to go.

I keep all of mine in a heated reptile room downstairs, but I'd love to find a way to put at least one display enclosures in a room we use more frequently.

I'd say a def. no to putting it in the guest bed room. I once had a rat cage and my reptiles in my guest bedroom (until we bought a house) and my guests hated it and I felt bad about them having to stay with animals they didn't like.

Our snakes are in our bedrooms. We want them all to ourselves lol. Plus it gives them privacy.

Next to the TV in the living room...though other than the kitchen and bathroom, my apartment is really one large room
No cage is too large - nature is the best template - a snoot can't be booped too much

Re: Where are your display cages located?

    You've seen my collection.

It's good and bad - good in that it's in my office and I can see/interact with them easily and bad in that it really limits the space thus limiting the number of snakes I can acquire (which in my girlfriends eyes is a good thing - not that she doesn't like them, just money can be spent elsewhere).

I would entertain moving them to a dedicated snake room in the basement but not in my current house - would have to be a new build or move.

Maybe move your office down there so you can see/interact more? I haven't seen your current set-up since my visit but if you did what you were describing, I'm sure it looks pretty sweet with all of the enclosures you amassed.

(PS - haven't heard back from the craigslist guy. I might be coming to your area soon to pick up a T8 from ccplotner HOPEFULLY - maybe we can schedule a visit and I'll bring Kelley with too. I'm also picking up that T25 in Chicago next month on my trip)

I never thought of moving my desk down there. That could work nicely, actually. I need to do some figuring on that over the weekend. Let me know your planned dates. My next few weekends are loaded.
