I just saw this thread... The thermostat probe goes OUTSIDE the tub, between the UTH and the bottom of the tub.
Only thermometer probes go inside the tub, since they just take temps.
Tape should never be anywhere near the snake, no tape should be in their enclosure ever, as it can kill them.
